Crawshay's residence

Image
Credit to ( I believe) Mary Brian for the photograph. Picture an image of life in South Wales in the #victorian age and it would probably be that of blackened-faced miners walking home to their shawl-covered wives after their twelve hour shift, singing hymns as they went. What is often forgotten about is the other end of society, for the 'masters of industry' made the equivalent of millions, and their lifestyle displayed it. Here is a picture of the Crawshay residence just outside #Pontypridd . Readers of Fortuna's Deadly Shadow will have come across it, though Inspector Chard was only greeted by one rather 'difficult' butler. https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2FFortunas-Deadly-Shadow-Leslie-Scase-ebook%2Fdp%2FB0DV3R91ZC%3Fcontent_source%3Dfb%26fb_content_id%3DQ9-wBQFaQX5aZevT_cGaZPmVcAav3TrRYEU86x7YB0k8X6VwggyAu9RM8JRFyXyUWg%26channel_type%3Dfb%26fbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAYnJpZBExenFnNG84YkViY0t0NDhZTHNydGMGYXBwX2lkEDIyMjAzOTE3ODgyM...

Fairfield

Image
(Credit to Roger Cheeseman for the colourised photo - now see below) When I'm writing the Chard novels, I'm very conscious that sometimes I'm describing buildings or locations that no longer exist. I doubt for example that many young people living in Treforest are aware that it used to boast, amongst other things, a steelworks, an ironworks and a commercial canal. In Pagan Rite, the Fairfield (aka Fair Field / The Captain's Field) is featured prominently. It disappeared decades ago. For people familiar with the modern town, it used to run behind Taff Street from roughly level with the front of the new library, as far as the car park entrance opposite Crossbrook Street and down to the river. The amount of land it covered became clearer when they knocked down the precinct prior to the redevelopment. It was used in the 1890s when Ynysangharad Park across the river was privately owned. The photograph is, I understand, of the entrance to the Fairfield during the visit ...

PEOPLE YOU MEET

Image
This morning I realise that going on a one-man pub crawl last night after having sadly seen Wolves beat Shrewsbury 6-1 in the afternoon was not a bright idea. I'm not safe to be let out on my own! However, I did bump into these Social Media Legends - If you haven't come across honorary Brits Kalani Ghost Hunter and Savannah Vlogs do give them a follow. Lovely people.

Pagan Rite will feature a number of real criminal cases as will the sixth novel (if I finish it). I'm now at the stage where I know everything that Chard won't encounter. As a result, every so often I'll delve into my research notes and pull out a case which otherwise would remain 'lost.' Let's start with a well-known topic - Baby Farming. This is where unmarried women would try and hide their 'fall fro...
